Domain Registration
If it isn't already, your website domain (i.e. yourcompanyname.com) must be registered with a licensed domain registrar.  This is what puts your website "on the map", so to speak, on the Information Highway.  Different registrars charge varying fees for this service, depending on how many years you register for at once.  Registration is charged on an annual basis, and if you fail to renew your registration, you risk losing ownership of your domain.  When you register, you must provide contact information for those people who are responsible for the administration, billing, and technical aspects of your website, as well as defining proper ownership of the site.  Personal sites are typically registered to an individual, while commercial sites must be registered to the company they represent (not the owner or CEO of the company, but the company itself).  Additionally, you must provide certain technical details about where your site is hosted in order for the browsing public to be able to find it.  Generally this is simply a matter of providing Name Server and IP address information in your domain registration.  Whoever will be hosting your website can provide this information to you.  Clever Technologies can register your domain for you to ensure that the technical information is supplied accurately, for a small fee.  This fee does not include the actual charges imposed by the registrar, which you must pay yourself directly, usually by credit card.  You will receive renewal notices directly from the registrar as necessary.

Domain Pointers
For commercial websites, in addition to your primary domain (i.e. yourcompanyname.com), you will probably want to register additional domains with the same name and different extensions (e.g. ".net" or ".org") in order to preserve and protect your company image and branding.  Some companies also register domains named after their key products, such as "myspecialwidget.com" in order to protect the integrity of the product line, and to make it easier for the browsing public to find your website by entering the name of your product.  These additional domains are all registered individually with a registrar as discussed above, and all are given the same information.  Your host, however, treats these differently than your primary domain, because you typically don't want a different website for each domain, but rather they all would be pointed to the same place.  To accomplish this, your host creates the space and folders for your primary domain, and creates additional "pointers" for the other domain names that all point to that same content.  This way, you are only paying for one hosting space, while your content will respond to a variety of names.

Email Accounts and Aliases
Each email account has a specific mailbox space and a username and password to access it.  Because of the space they require, and licensing of the software required to maintain it, these are limited in number and additional accounts are provided for an extra fee.  Aliases, on the other hand, are just redirectors, or false email addresses that you may provide to the public to gather common mail and pass it along to a real email account.  For example, let's say you have an account such as "yourname@yourcompany.com". You might also want to publish on your website something like "info@yourcompany.com".  Instead of having two email accounts to check, you simply make the 2nd one an alias and point it back to your real email account, so that any email sent to either address ends up in your account.  Since aliases have no username or password or message space of their own, you can have as many of these as you want.  Generally you will always have one email account that collects all email that is not correctly addressed to any other email account or alias.  This is useful for catching messages that have slight misspellings instead of rejecting the message back to the sender.  The unfortunate part about this however, is that such an account will collect all manner of junk as well, because spammers and other email advertisers can address messages to "anything@yourcompany.com" and it will be received without rejection.

AntiSpam / AntiVirus Gateway
Our exclusive SMTP Gateway system protects you from virus infections and improves worker productivity by significantly limiting the amount of junk mail delivered to you and your employees.  While there is no absolute solution to stopping all spam without catching a few legitimate messages, our system has proven to be highly effective and accurate.  For a complete description of of how it works and answers to common questions (FAQ) click here.

NNTP Newsgroup Server
Newsgroups are terrific for allowing your visitors to post messages to each other and share information, as well as useful for you to manage customer service issues.  Extremely easy to set up, you can have different newsgroups each with it's own message base and topic, and all your visitors need to access them is a simple newsreader program, such as Microsoft Outlook Express, included free with Internet Explorer.

LiveStats Traffic Reporting
Now that you have your site up and running, and you've fed it to the search engine spiders, it's time to take a look at the traffic that's coming in, where they're coming from, what they're looking at (and what they're not), and why they found your website.  LiveStats is a reporting application that keeps track of loads of information about every visitor you get to your site, and compiles it all into very cool graphs and reports.  Analyzing these can give you direction on what areas of your site to enhance, what you might want to do away with, and even how to better draw traffic from the search engines by fine tuning your content and META Tags.  You can see who's on your site at any given moment, and look at traffic flow by the hour, day, week, or month, and break it down by area of your site.  Additionally, you can see where in the world your visitors came from geographically, what kinds of browsers and computer systems they use, and much more.  This information is very helpful in guiding you toward serving up what your audience wants in a format that will give them the best browsing experience and keep them coming back.  In addition to accessing your stats any time you want live, you will also receive weekly and monthly summary reports.  These are generated automatically and sent to you via email in HTML format.

InfoChat Live Chat Service
Live chat can have a number of benefits when included in your website.  Community building is the obvious scenario, by giving your users with common interests a place to come and gather and get acquainted and share their views and experiences with others.  If they keep coming back to chat, you can bet they are looking at other parts of your site, too, and the more time they spend on your site the more likely they are to do business with you.  Chat communities help to build a trust in the sites that host them and the companies that support them.  Other applications for live chat include real-time assistance to visitors, product support, training, and scheduled events such as seminars or guest interviews.  If you have a user on your site that is having difficulty finding or understanding information on your site, they might get frustrated and go elsewhere, however if there is always a link on all of your pages where they can connect immediately with a live person on your staff and get direction or a question answered, you've provided a valuable service to a potential customer and are much more likely to gain success with your visitors and project a positive impression, one that they are likely to tell others about!  For product support, instead of having them wait on hold on the phone, costing you hundreds of dollars in toll-free customer service phone bills, why not offer free online live support?  Your customers get the same level of expertise, probably get faster service, and sometimes several people in a support chat room will help each other while waiting for their own question to be addressed, thus reducing the load on your support staff.  Employee training, group seminars, and guest interviews can be conducted in a "moderated" mode that allows you a more structured control over the conversation, the questions, and the flow of the interaction.

Thawte SSL Certificate
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates are issued by special certificate authorities, such as Thawte, Verisign, and others, that allow you to conduct secure transactions and pass encrypted data in and out of your website.  This is essential for online purchases involving confidential information such as customer names, addresses, credit card, and order data.  It also is useful when delivering password information for restricted areas to users.  Always remember that email is generally a completely unsecured means of communication: anyone with simple network monitoring tools can read your email as it is sent or received and can potentially take advantage of the information contained therein.  Never transmit sensitive information by email unless it is "packaged" in some secure encrypted format or file.  When you apply for an SSL certificate, the certificate authority will ask you to provide some documented proof that you are who you say you are and that you are legitimately the owner of, or an authorized agent of the company that owns, the domain for which you are requesting a certificate.  Once completed, the authority will use a special key file generated by your host to create a certificate file which must then be installed on the server where your website resides.  If you move your website, you can usually transfer the certificate to the new host (no guarantees here: it depends on the type of servers and operating systems of both hosts whether or not a certificate can be transferred).  Much awareness has been made of internet security, and many people will not interact with a site that is not secured with an SSL certificate.

Index Server Document Search
Index Server allows you to create a "mini search engine" within your site or within one or more folders of documents within your site.  Index server keeps track of all the documents in the areas you specify, and it "reads" them all for text content and certain META tags, and builds an index.  Then, using a search form your visitors can type a word or phrase and all relevant documents that have been indexed will be listed and ranked on their relevance.  Each will have a link to that document.  You can supplement the results with file dates, author names, descriptions, and more.  Search capability is ideal for larger sites that have a lot of content and are readily used by visitors because it works just like the major search sites.

SQL Server Databases
Most websites of any significant size have some sort of database that drives them.  Whether it's collecting data or driving personalized or dynamic content, the strength and security of the database engine are keys to the reliability and success of the application.  While Microsoft Access and similar types of small databases can serve some low-end applications with non-sensitive information stored in them, the fact remains that these lack the robustness to handle hundreds of simultaneous requests for data to be stored or retrieved.  Enter Microsoft SQL Server.  This engine has great performance capabilities, and is easy to manage and manipulate.  SQL Server also has scalability, which means that as you and your data grow, the SQL Server database can grow with you and handle high volumes of data traffic.  Another advantage of SQL Server is that it has direct migration capability from Microsoft Access.  This means that you can develop and test the functionality of your application with the convenience that Access provides, and then when you are ready to go live the Access database can be easily converted directly to SQL Server.  This allows for rapid development and deployment while keeping costs down.

Media Server Streaming
More and more we are seeing an increase in the use of streaming audio/video broadcasting, and it has evolved over the last few years into an innovative means of content presentation.  Movie trailers, sports highlights, promotional messages, and training videos are just a few of the examples where broadcast media can be effectively used to enhance your site content and provide more "draw" for visitors to keep coming back to see more.  Some radio stations simulcast their regular broadcast on their website, so users can listen while they browse.  If you have pre-recorded material on VHS, CD, or DVD, bring it to us and let us show you how we can make it come alive on your website.

ASP Server Components
When developing in ASP, often it is necessary to invoke the functionality of server-installed components to accomplish various tasks.  We have a comprehensive array of components installed on our ASP servers, and the list continues to grow.  In order to control costs, each component is licensed to the websites that need it.  Here is a list of the most popular components we have:

Persits Software

  • ASPEmail - Sends email and posts to newsgroups in text and HTML, with attachments and lots of other features...by far the best email component we've found.

  • ASPJpeg - Image manipulation, dynamic sizing, rotation, flip, and more

  • ASPGrid - Excellent data-grid with single or multiple row edits, data transformation, etc.

  • ASPUpload - Upload files through browser interface.  Can determine file type, restrict to configurable size limit and can save uploaded files anywhere with any name and extension.

ServerObjects

  • ASPHttp - Put/Get/Head HTTP requests to other pages or scripts, either within your website or elsewhere.  Allows for username and password to connect to protected scripts.

  • ASPPop3 - Email retrieval allows you to fetch any POP3 email, including attachments, and delete mail from the mail server if desired.

Caprock Consulting

  • Dictionary Object - Similar to the standard Scripting Dictionary, but may be used in Session and Application scope safely without degrading server performance.

Hexillion HexGadgets

  • HexTcpQuery - Grab web pages, query Whois servers and more. HexTcpQuery provides a simple interface for implementing common protocols such as HTTP, Whois, and Finger.
